The King visits a plotting room at Portsmouth.
by Andy Forster of Hull
I once talked to a lady who had worked at an RAF Operations Room during the Battle of Britain. Her job was to plot on the big map in the middle of the room where the German aircraft were and direct the RAF planes towards them.
Once battle was joined, it could be a harrowing experience — Many of the lady plotters were seeing pilots or simply knew them socially, and it was distressing to hear the terrible screaming of a man burning to death in his cockpit, unable to release the canopy, his radio still on, all the way down to earth. Not pleasant.
