Dear Mother
Received your welcome letter dated 10th and am pleased to hear by it that you are all keeping well and that you had a good holiday. When you receive this letter don't write again for I will be home sometime this month as I expect to leave next week, and I am not just certain how long it takes. I have been travelling about a bit but everyplace I have been has not been like the photos. They are of places well known in peacetime, but the place I am now is miles from anywhere, and with the clocks changing it has made it pretty deadly at night, however I suppose we have to take the bad with the good and I haven't done so bad so far. The weather is not to bad at present so it helps matters quite a lot.
Ina has surely changed her tune again. I don't think there is much chance of getting a motor run, for in the first place it is not worth taking out a car for we just get enough petrol for 300 miles and by the time you pay for insurance, tax etc. you would be far cheaper going by rail, I would have liked it myself but I have worked it all out and convinced myself it is not worth it. Have you still got my bank book, for I expect I will be needing it when I get home as I am not going to draw anything here and in any case we are just allowed to take 拢10 out of the country. I don't know what I am going to wear when I get home for I am almost certain my suit will be too small for me. I am sorry to hear about Bill. I didn't know he was in hospital. I expect I will see Dougall when I am home. I haven't heard any word from Jack Kirkwood for a bit now, so we will just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that we get home together. The boy Leonard's always drank for I can remember them when we were at Strathaven.
Well mother I will now conclude trusting this finds you all well, until I see you all, give my love to all
Your loving son
Jimmy
