My great uncle died on 18th or 19th of April, 1944 in the battle for Mount Cassino. He was killed by artilery.
It is my understand that he was with 'C' Company, 2/4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment.
His name was Christopher Denis Hemmings but he was better known as Denis Hemmings. His serial number was 14398664. DOB was 1926.
His C.O. Sgt L. Butland - Serial number 5500537.
According to Sgt Butland's letter to Christopher's parents, he volunteered to go in advance of the line to obtain drinking water and was killed with another soldier. Two other soldiers were killed.
The above information is known. The following information is requested.
I have not been able to establish where Christopher's unit was located (in or out of town).
I am also looking for any information that I can on the overall conflict and if possible, some kind of map showing the disposition of each unit in the conflict.
Most of the information I have been able to find is about American forces (they tend to ignore that fact that they had alies) and there is virtually no access to view material in Australia (my home).
While Christopher is an 18 y/o private, I am assuming that he would have been eligible for a postumous medal as a casualty of war. I also do not have access to any military records for him.
If you can assist with any form of information or suggest alternative internet resorces, I would be greatly appreciative.
My Email address is leonard1963@bigpond.com I would like to hear from anyone who can help.
