I dont know much about this event because my grandad has only ever told it once. However he may talk about this again because he now suffers from memery problems and now speaks alot of 'his time in kahki'.
The story began when the coventry fire station that he was based at got an job in bedworth, he told me that he never knew what to expect. The call they recieved was to an areodrome i think in Bedworth.
As the engine approached the area he spoke of thick black smoke that bellowed into the sky from beyonde the hill.
When he finally arrived at the site he said there was a plane on the airstrip that had failed to take off properly and had came back for an emergency landing, but the landing was a disaster and the plane came down on top of the young men that were based at the air strip. He said that many of the young men perished.I cant remember what plane it was.
He said it was the most upseting thing he ever saw. When he told me the story it was the only time i ever saw grandad shed a tear. At that time the way he looked was so sad his eyes were sad, sad for the young men that had died in the plane disaster. He went on to talk about the good times there were in the fire sevice. For that moment he was very proud to have served king and country.
As you can see the information on this story is very thin and if anyone can help me or has any information. I would be very happy to hear from you. If you can contact me throug bbci then do that if not you can email me at adam_garratt@hotmail.com
