Thomas Lister, or Tommy as he was known, my grandfather, was the youngest Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army during the war. I am uncertain of the exact details and dates - it may have been after 1940. But during the evacuation from Dunkirk he was in charge of some borstal boys. When he got shot, and told them to leave him, they insisted on carrying him to the beach, and so they saved his life. He was later presented with a watch from these lads, as they had a lot of respect for him. We've still got it.

He arrived back in England in his underwear.
