This story was told to a member of East Ayrshire Libraries by Jon Fredrick Whitmill on Thursday 20th May 2004.
John and his brother Walter were both in the Airbourne Division - John signed up first (for the money!) and Walter was in the military police unit.
He was posted to Arnhem where duties included directing traffic. When the Allies collapsed, Walter was captured.
He and a few others managed to escape and Walter was sheltered by a Dutch family. He survived a search of the family home by hiding under the floorboards.
The Dutch family helped him to reach the British line and eventually he made it home safely. Walter kept in touch with his Dutch helpers until his death in the 1970s and his son then took over the friendship.
