My grandfather was in a reserved occupation - he worked for Scottish Oils in their laboratories, and he was working in their Grangemouth site at the start of the war. He had climbed to the top of the towers to collect a sample for testing, when he saw the planes from City of Edinburgh squadron flying, and then saw the German planes they were intercepting. He sat on top of the storage tower, watching the dogfights from his ringside seat, until he realised - he was sitting on about 40,000 gallons of aviation fuel - he climbed down from the tower in record time!
