A mother and 3 children were billeted to our house. They had one bedroom. It could have been two. They also had the front room. They stayed with us for 3 years at least. I was 8 when the war started. The evacuees came from Lamberth in London. They spoke in cockney. My mother and the evacuee mother shared the cooking and the washing. The two girls went to the council school. It was very different for them as we kept chickens and pigs. We had no choice as to who to take in as we had a big house. I think the father was probably fighting in the war.
