I remember one time when two bombs landed at the back of our house. The roof was lifted by the blast, and we were left with a quarter of an inch gap between the walls and the roof. It was big enough to get your fingers through. My mother was hurt by the blast, and one of our neighbours got killed. I got some glass in my elbow. I was patched up in the first aid station which had been set up in the local pub.

I was evacuated to Wantage for a while, but came back and helped on the land. We had some Land Army girls come and help us a s well. As an 18 year old lad, I quite liked that!
