This particular Tuesday we were repairing war damaged property when a shout from the rear of the building was 'look out, here comes one gliding'. This meant that we had a V1 approaching in silent mode, having its engine switched off. We heard it swish overhead and waited. It proceeded parallel to Eltham High Street, clipping the spire of Eltham Church and crashing on the paintworks/Hitches garage area. A lot of damage and some casualties were caused and Eltham Hill was covered in multi-coloured paint. The damage to Eltham Church spire was a top section clipped off, not replaced until some time in the 1950s and if the building is studied carefully the line can still be seen where the two sections joined.
