This particular Tuesday we were repairing war damaged property when a shout from the rear of the building was 'look out, here comes one gliding'. This meant that we had a V1 approaching in silent mode, having its engine switched off. We heard it swish overhead and waited. It proceeded parallel to Eltham High Street, clipping the spire of Eltham Church and crashing on the paintworks/Hitches garage area. A lot of damage and some casualties were caused and Eltham Hill was covered in multi-coloured paint. The damage to Eltham Church spire was a top section clipped off, not replaced until some time in the 1950s and if the building is studied carefully the line can still be seen where the two sections joined.

Message 1 - August 1944 - Southend Crescent, Eltham SE9

Posted on: 25 April 2005 by John Cakebread

I was 7 years old at that time. I vividly rember the incident.

I had been to Eltham shopping with my Mother. the Air Raid Warning siren sounded and we went with other shoppers into a shelter in the basement of Burtons, the Tailors.

When the doodlebug exploded the whole buiding shook like there was an earthquake and dust was shaken from every nook and cranny.

When we surfaced, I remember seeing the top of the spire of Eltham Church was missing.
