I was a young girl (my maiden name was Barnes) during the War and I can
remember sitting on a wall one day near the RAF base at Martlesham when the
village police station was destroyed during an enemy raid.
Another day, I was walking with my dad near the church when two aircraft
flew low, firing madly. Dad and I dived under a gorse bush - which was a
little painful.
I can also remember the siren going off before a bomb dropped into a field,
where we were blackberrying. It brought the electricity wires down. The RAF
boys at Martlesham were great; they came running down to see if we were all
right and took us for tea.
There were good times as well as bad. People were a lot closer and
neighbours shared things.
