These are some of the most memorable events from my grandfather when I asked him about the war. Some of the information is from my dad.
My grandfather was watching a newsreel at the cinema during the Blitz. There were fires everywhere. There was a fireman on a fire escape ladder in front of a building. He was spraying the flames with the hose, but the wall collapsed under the heat. The ladder(which was resting on the wall) collapsed and the man fell into the pile of rubble. He said that there were fires everywhere in 1940 from the bombing. He can also remember that there was black rain in Norfolk a few days after Dunkirk because of all the pollulion from the battle.
He also said that HMS Triumph was hit by a mine, so it had to be escorted home.
In March, there would have been some attacks by aircraft but it was too windy to fly.
When my granddad was doing homeguard training to join the navy; the officers were fatally injured when they were fireing grenade launchers.
He was also in Japan shortly after the nucleur bomb went off. He found a piece of glass which had been melted from the heat of the bomb. There were also outlines of boddies on walls from where people had burnt them.
