I was in Greece on VE day. I was still only 20 years old. I remember that it was the commanding officer who told us war was over. It was in a field in Stillis. It was hot that day, I do know that. No one knew it was coming though. Everyone celebrated. We had a sports day to celebrate with a tug of war and the like. There was boxing and football and we went on Parade in our gun carriers.
My reaction was `what happens to us now`
We put flags on the cars and burnt a model of Hitler. The locals bought us supplies and we had cherry brandy and Greek wine.
We soon went back to normal duties and had to let the Greeks know that war was over `cause they hadn鈥檛 heard. I came home in 1945 and went back to training on Chatham marshes to go out to Japan.
