My story took place in Lewes sometime in January/February 1943.
I was on a school trip to the Odeon Cinema in Lewes and we were allowed to go to a morning picture show. The film we saw was Mr Pitt the Younger starring Robert Donat. While we in the cinema there was an air raid. The Germans were aiming for the Lewes railway. However they missed the railway and hit some nearby local cottages resulting in casualties. As we were trying to get back to the school we took shelter in a nearby garage. When we thought it was safe to do so we went back to school and were made to sit in the air raid shelter for another hour although nothing further happened.
Our teacher needed a whiskey to calm her nerves. The girls thought it was quite exciting, but it did mean the end of any more school trips.
