I also remember what became known as the 'Leicester Blitz'. Sirens went at about 7pm and flares were seen over the city. I heard the syncopated, droning sound of Dornier and other German Bombers. Amongst the areas that were hit, included Freeman Hardy and Willis' shoe factory and areas around Highfields - Sparkenoe Street, Cavendish Road and the pavillion at Victoria Park was destroyed. There was also found a landmine at Birstall, not far from the LNER Railway.
