We lived in Romford and stayed together as a family through the war, but when the doodle bugs started my mother lost her nerve and sent my sister and I to stay with one of my mother's sisters in Troon. Shortly after our train left London a bomb dropped on the railway and my poor parents had to wait to know if we were both all right. There were some soldiers in our compartment. My sister had a tiny pack of playing cards (tiny in war time to save paper). The soldiers asked if they could borrow them and were delighted when she said yes. I was just turned five and my sister was fourteen.
