My earliest recollection of childhood occured in 1945, when I was 4 years old(DOB Sept 1940)We lived in Palmers Green London N13.
My older brother who was 7 had been evacuated to Wales, my mother had recently given birth to my sister. It must have been a Sunday. My parents decided to take us out for the afternoon to Alexandra Palace. I remember my mother pushing the pram, my father held our dog , a black labrador called Jess on a lead. I was holding onto the pram. It was a fine day with plenty of people out enjoying a stroll, boating, children playing etc,.
Then a Doodle Bug came overhead, making a terrible noise, people became alarmed, they searched the sky trying to locate the flying bomb.
My mother said we must leave the area immediatly, my father said why and where too
as this may well be the safest place, because from the high vantage of A P he could observe what was going on.
Then Jess, the dog panicked,or, fancied a swim, she broke away and jumped into the boating lake. My father called after her, then he tried to pull her up the steep side of the lake.
The Doodle Bugs engine cut and people started running for cover, there was plenty of noise and shouting. My father was still trying to get the dog out of the lake. Mother started to panick, telling my father to leave the dog and look after the family.
I was frightened so my mother picked me up and sat me on the pram, holding me with one hand and pushing with the other. My sister began to cry, pandemonium reigned.
My father retieved the dog, after which we hurriedly made our way home.
The bomb fell somewhere near Bounds Green. I remember the incident but was not aware of the detail until years later, when my parents reminisced and told me about''That Day At Alexandra Palace''
