Joyce Preston
Oxton Road, Birkenhead
My first memory at two and a half years old, was standing by my mother at the bottom of the cellar steps. She was sitting in a Lloyd Loom chair nursing my baby sister of less than a year old, when an incendiary bomb dropped opposite and we were buried for hours. The cellar door had fallen in on us, and saved us from the worst of the blast.
Several hours later my uncle came and tried to salvage what was left of my parents home, and took us to our grandmothers house. Only two dinner plates survived, from my Mothers wedding present of a dinner service.
