Full moons were dangerous! Especially if one lived by a river or canal.
My sister and I were in bed, the sirens went and our parents called for us to come down to the shelter. But the bed was warm, it was too cold to get out and my sister, five years younger than myself, was definitely not going to move.
I got out of bed and looked through the window at a beautiful full moon which was filling our bedroom with it's light. As I watched I saw a slender silver shape, to my young mind rather like a sausage. It was gliding past my window to the earth.
Suddenly I became aware that this was danger!
I grabbed my sister, still protesting, and pulled her under the bed. I somehow knew we had no time to get to the shelter. We cowered there and waited.
There was an almighty bang then dead absolute silence, then gently things began to fall from the sky. This went on for a long time, and when finally we emerged, it was to find our home wrecked completely.
