My first ever memory as a child of 4yrs (Sept 4th1935) was being taken to see, in my parents bedroom, my newly born brother (Aug 29th 1939)lying in our mother's arms.
Nothing else registered except the fact that the first siren I had ever heard then went off. Of course I had no idea what it was or what it looked like, but have a memory of expecting to see a tall platform being wheeled round the corner of our road.
In later years our uncle who became a Special Constable let me start a siren in the police call box (Tardis today) on Enfield Highway- he soon moved the handle back as the "growl" began to be heard!
