The YPNS was probably dreamt up by the local wardens and if you qualified you got an armband for which there was quite a lot of competition to wear.
We used to go around trying to assist wardens with any of the tasks that they got involved with.
Members used to go around making maps of fire hydrants and places where you could get water, so that during an emergency you could get access to water in a hurry.
In London we used to get quite a bit of heavy snow so naturally if they knew a certain house where there was a fire hydrant very close they knew where to go in the event of a fire attack.
I was probably about eight years old when I was a member. I didn't get evacuated I stayed in London for the whole of the war and we didn't look on it as anything particularly dangerous at that time; for us children it was a form of sport!
