Random Memories
My father worked at Cammel Laird's shipyard in Birkenhead; the family - mother, father, my brother and myself - lived in Wallasey, across the river Mersey. My mother, brother and I were evacuated to my grandparents, who lived in Grove Cottage (owned by the Grove Estate). This was in the early 1940's. I have a vivid memory of being in the backyard of the cottage when an enemy (German) bomber flew over, heading north. I was surprised to see crosses on the wings and not swastikers.
My brother and I often visited soldiers who were billeted in the field on the left-hand side of the steep bank leading from Grove Cottage (under the railway bridge) to Wistanstow. They made wooden swords for each of us as Christmas presents. My grandfather showed black and white silent films of Charlie Chaplin in the cottage's living room, using a 16 millimeter projector and a white sheet.
I attended Wistanstow school and remember being taken on nature walks, crossing the road from the school.
