Hugh Johnstone of Dalmellington remembers that during the war the government produced a slogan every year to keep morale up.
The first year the slogan was "Dig for Victory" and all the spare ground in the village including the school playground was taken up for the cultivation of winter vegetables and this helped to supplement the school kitchen during the winter. Mr John McChesney of Dalrymple who was a woodwork teacher at the school would even head to Dalmellington on a Saturday from 9-1pm and he and some of the senior boys would tend the crop in the school playground.
The second year the slogan was "Careless talk costs lives" - the Dalmellington Silver Band was involved in broadcasting this message around the village. The local Sergeant Major paraded around with the Band and used a loudhailer to get the message across.
The third year the slogan was "Buy War Bonds" and again the Sergeant Major and members of the Band paraded the streets and passed on the message.
