My father-in-law was in the 1/7th Middlesex Regiment(guns and mortar division )during WW2 along with his older brother Ben.Their Captain was one Captain Peter Borthwick who had been recruited from the London Rifle Regiment after returning from the Middle East.
On the night of 15th November 1944,after they, alongside the 51st Highlanders, had taken the village of Leveruij in Holland and were sheltering in the village school, the Germans attacked with self-propelled guns and a shell dropped on the school roof. Private Norman John Brazier, my father-in-law and his brother, Corporal Benjamin Albert Brazier were both severely injured along with many of their comrades. Captain Peter Borthwick helped Private Brazier to an awaiting truck and then went back in for his brother. Once they were safe, he returned for more survivors, but as he crossed the playground another shell killed him outright. My father-in-law only learned of his death along with most of the battalion when he arrived in the hospital in Einhaven, Holland.
As you can imagine Captain Borthwick is looked upon as something of a hero in our family. My father-in-law will be 84yrs old next birthday and his brother is 89yrs old. We have tried to trace living members of Captain Borthwicks family but with no success, so if anyone has any information it would make two old soldiers very happy.
