At the start of the War I was 16 years old and after it was declared I was fire watching from the top of Lincoln Castle. We had a Pantograph which enabled the operator to pinpoint any lights or fires.
At the end of 1940 I joined the LDV which later became the Home Guard.
The first assembly was at Lincoln School (later to become Christ Hospital). We were asked to parade with whatever weapons we could muster. Our Unit was almost as depicted in Dad's Army - I might have been Private Pike. Our transport were 2 lorries which were used to cart gravel to the Airfields and were owned by 2 brothers in the Unit.
I lived in a house looking over the cliff on Burton Road and watched the aircraft taking off from Skellingthorpe Airfield. The passed over us by only a few feet which was a bit scary at tines.
