I was 12 years old when the war ended in 1945.
I lived in Eccleston Road,West Ealing with my mother,grand-mother and my two sisters. My father served with the Royal Artillary for the duration of the war.
An un forgettable experience happened to our family during the London Blitz.
The air-raid siren was situated immediatly outside our front door and had not sounded before an oil bomb hit our semi-detached house
and at the same time hit a garage on the main road about 100 yards away.
An inferno resulted during which time the dividing wall of our house collapsed and it was only the quick action of my mother that saved my younger sister who was lying on her bed.
She pulled her away from the wall by her long, dark hair.
Unfortunately the two elderly ladies next door
whohad had the direct hit, had locked themselves in their bedroom and had been quickly rescued by my father, who was on leave, and his friend.
I remember that when they appeared in the street their nightdresses were on fire.
My mother tried to douse the flames with a blanket but I understand that they died on the way to hospital.
As a result of this bombing we were allocated a requisition house at number 80 Cleveland Road Ealing Common
