There had been a lull in the air raids for a few days. A friend and I decided to take a chance and go to the pictures.
The cinema was called the Splendid. We enjoyed the programme and afterwards, because it was clear night, decided to make the 30 minute walk, instead of the tram.
About half way back the Sirens went off and the barrage started up immediately. I took my shoes off and holding them on my head, ran as fast as I could for home.
I had to pass an ARP warden in the shelter next to my road. I think he was surprised to see my shoes on the top of my head. I asked him what the schrapnel was liked round here?
" Hot and Sharp!" was his quick reply. With a laugh he put his hard hat on my head and escorted me home
