Prior to the War, I was a blood donor.
I worked as a Manager of an Engineering Company, next door to the hospital, where I regularly donated blood.
During the War, after a particulary heavy raid, the Matron of the hospital, rang through to me to ask if I could attend urgently to supply some blood, as I was an unusual blood group, which was needed for an emergency operation.
I obviously attended immediately and went to the ward, which was full of casualties, to meet Matron.
The Matron and I approached one elderly lady, who was occupying one of the ward beds.
She looked at me and asked Matron who I was, to which Matron replied "This is John, he has come to donate some blood to enable you to have your emergency operation this afternoon".
The elderly lady beckoned me closer and, in a strong Cockney accent, said "YES, BUT IS IT FRESH?!!"
Turning to the Matron she said "You can't be too careful these days can you?"!!
On relating this story, back at the office, to my work colleagues, the saying "You can't be too careful, John!" stayed with me throughout the rest of the War years!
