This story was recounted by Richard Taylor of the 493rd Bomber Group Museum at Debach.

The first mission for the Liberators at the new air base at Debach near Ipswich was on D-Day. Thirty six planes took off on the raid to target the French town of Lisieux, east of Caen.

Cloud cover prevented the planes from dropping their bombs, and the planes had to return home. Unfortunately, two collided over the chanel. Nineteen men were lost, with only one survivor.

That evening Lord Haw Haw remarked that the Germans had nothing to fear from the new US Bomber Group as they kepy knocking each other out of the sky.
