Just before the war ended we had a special treat. All sorts of food we had not seen for a long time, or at all. There were sultanas, cheese and a banana.

I had never seen a banana, and tried to eat it with the skin on, and of course it tasted horrible.

Another time a bread van overturned near our home. The bread went all over the place. All the children took as much as possible home.

Of course it could not be returned, and we had a lot of toast (heated with a toasting fork) that day.
