Schools and teaching were a problem in the Byker - Walker of North East England where I lived. Sometimes, if night bombing attacks had occured (often 2 or 3 in one night) we were allowed to start school later than usual at 10.30am so we could catch up on lost sleep. The teachers were grateful also as they had had their sleep interrupted too.
The teachers were mainly women as the men were all away in the forces, usually as officers and they sometimes came to the school when on embarkation to say hello and goodbye
