This story was told to a member of East Ayrshire Library staff at their tea party on 11th June 2004 by May Fraser.
May worked at Blackwood and Morton’s (carpet factory) until she was 18 then she moved to Glenfield and Kennedy, an engineering firm, to work on the munitions. She made blocks for 6 pound guns – working three nights a week until 9 o’clock, starting at 8 a.m.. She worked a Saturday morning. Night shifts were from 10 o’clock twice a week and 6 o’clock the rest of the week. It was hard work but Glenfield and Kennedy was a happy place.
May was standing at the front door of her house when the bomb dropped on Culzean Cres and she was lifted off her feet. The bomb demolished a four in a block house but May can’t recall if anyone was killed. The bomb just missed the railway line.
She remembers running up the road after work to get to the dancing or the fairground for the last hour! She met her husband – John – while working at Glenfield.
