I was conscripted into the ATS in 1940 when I was 20. I was from Sunderland, and had never even have heard of Lowestoft until we got here.
I was with 558 Battery, 161 regiment, and we were the first mixed battery of ATS. We took over from an all male unit on the golf course.
We were housed in evacuated houses, three to a room.
They kept moving us around, and I remember going to Derby for a 鈥渞est鈥 once. The unit was eventually disbanded and I went to the Pay Corps in Edinburgh instead.
I do remember that the Wrens in Lowestoft used to get free bus travel, but us ATS girls had to pay.
I also remember that on our rare evenings off we used to go across the road, take our cap badges off, and pinch apples from the orchard
