At Buckingham Palace to receive the DFC

I was in the Auxiliary territorial service where I was a switchboard operator. I worked shifts. I remember talking to the Majors and Colonels on night duty. I met my husband Fred in York; he was a bomber pilot. I would hear the bombers going out at night and wonder if he would come back. It really was a worrying time.

He won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We went to Buckingham Palace to receive the medal; it was a very sombre occasion. There were no celebrations. The King was ill, so the Queen Mother presented it. He never talked about it at all, but his gunner told me how he got it. He shielded one of the other planes, which had been hit, and he guarded it home to base. He was later awarded a Bar to his DFC.

Message 1 - Bomb Aimer

Posted on: 23 February 2005 by GrandmaSue

Hello,

My Dad was a Bomb Aimer in 57 Squadron based at East Kirkby, May to October 1944. I have learned so much since Dad finally recorded his wartime memories. My Mum was a signaller in the Wrens. They had a code they used so she would know when he was out on a mission. She counted the Lancs returning from missions my Dad was part of - I cannot even begin to imagine how traumatic that must have been and so admire the strength she had and still does! It has been a very humbling experience. Now I have edited Dad's story, he tells me that my Mum is writing her experiences in the Wrens. How sad so many had such an abrupt ending.

My parents were so fortunate that they both survived and have lived and still living a full life - they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last April 2004 and last count have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren.

I feel priviledged to have read your story. Thank you.
