At Buckingham Palace to receive the DFC
I was in the Auxiliary territorial service where I was a switchboard operator. I worked shifts. I remember talking to the Majors and Colonels on night duty. I met my husband Fred in York; he was a bomber pilot. I would hear the bombers going out at night and wonder if he would come back. It really was a worrying time.
He won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We went to Buckingham Palace to receive the medal; it was a very sombre occasion. There were no celebrations. The King was ill, so the Queen Mother presented it. He never talked about it at all, but his gunner told me how he got it. He shielded one of the other planes, which had been hit, and he guarded it home to base. He was later awarded a Bar to his DFC.
