Message 1 - Italy

Posted on: 12 March 2005 by footslogger

I was told about this site by a friend I made on a Battlefield tour I took last September.
I have lived in Toronto Canada since 1955 (but was born in London and lived in Finchley )

I was very interested in reading Ron Goldstein's recollections, as I was where he was, at many of the places he has mentioned and it has brought back lots of memories good and bad
I was with 6 th.btn. RWK 36th Bgd 78th div. 3 inch mortar's 1st & 8th armies
One of the places was at was Cassino and he mentioned a hill which I think is Castle Hill which is right in front of the monastery, we had a plattoon up in the castle which was captured after a heavy fight with the Germans.
My platoon was down in the gulley almost opposite the hill giving covering fire.
.
I think my strangest experience on the tour was having an espresso coffee in a snack bar that is now directly opposite Castle Hill and in front of the gully where my mortars were and looking up at Castle Hill and the monastery from there, all so peaceful now!
I wopuld like hear from Ron and anyone else who was around at that time

Hi Footslogger
Before I forget, click on this link :
A3296162 just in case it's one of your mates...when you look around this site you will soon find that it's a very small world !
Having got that out of the way, welcome to the site.
I'm glad you enjoyed reading some of my memories, they are of course 'shared' memories and when I wrote them it was in the hope that others, like you, would recall their own adventures.
Nothing in life lasts forever and be warned that this site is closing its dors to new entries in November this year.
Please start sending in articles (including your favourite photos) and then you will be able to share your memories with other old soldiers like yours truly.
With all good wishes
Ron
