I was 4 years old when World War 2 started.
I remember being issued with a small gas mask and we had to have them with us at all times. Outside the school there were these metal squares on the wall outside, they were green and they'd change to another colour if there was gas in the air. Luckily they never changed colour at our school.
It was quite scary really, because every time I put the gas mask on I felt I was going to suffocate.
I remember when we had sweet coupons too. We ate a lot more fruit back then, seasonal ones of course like apples, damsons, plums and so on. We didn't even know what oranges and bananas were until the end of the war.
