There were four of us kids, and the youngest were the twins, Christine and Carol Jarvis. They grew up to be famous ice skating stars. I remember going to Brockwell Park with mum - she had the twins in the pram, and a raid started. We all sheltered by a wall and waiting for the bombing to finish. One particularly big raid happened - this was sometime in 1944. When we were in the shelter, the bombs made my little brother leap into the air. The twins were all tucked up in a couple of drawers. When we got home, the doors and windows were all blown in. We were evacuated to Cambridge and slept in a big house with five other families. I had to wear my gran's shoes - and when these wore out, I wore canvas shoes that were buckled in the front, they were like tap dancing shoes. The bombing was bad - when my brother came back from Tripoli, he said he had never heard such terrible bombing as the doodlebugs in Croydon.
