These memories were told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005.
I served all over the world in a Scottish regiment. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the war. I was stationed in four different countries Japan; Malaya; India and China after doing all my basic training in Richmond, Yorkshire.
When I'd been in the army a bit, I wrote home 'Mam, sell the pig and buy me out'. Her response was typical of the time 'you've got to stick it'. Having said that I'm an ex miner, so I worked in the pits, come out of the pits to go in the army then back to the pits.
Not an easy life but with so many others I did my bit.
