At the onset of the war my sister and I were evacuated to Blackpool We lived in Devonshire Road. The house was a large one with an equally large garden and an orchard. On our first day she had us picking apples from
the orchard. This went on all afternoon and she never even offered us an apple, We were too scared to take one. In the evening she took us off to visit a friend. Instead of inviting us into the friends house, she left us on the doorstep all evening. Our mother had sent us with a tin of cornbeef, which the landlady cut up into small squares and we were fed that for nearly a week. By which time it was dried up and extremely unappetising. Our landlady was mean spirited and she treated us with disdain and no empathy. We wrote and told my mother how we were being treated so she brought us home after two weeks.
