We had Soldiers billeted with us in our home in Luton during the war. The soldiers had to report for duty every day. They would go dwn to the SKF factory in Sundon Park (it was called 'The Centre') they did shifts of 6am - 2pm and 2pm - 10pm.
One chap came from York and invited our family back to his home, one evening his mother said "That's Hull again" we could see the bombing all that way away. Her son was in Hull working on reconstruction work, as he was a carpenter and joiner by trade whenever he was home on leave he would have to work.
Thankfully he was ok and he came home that weekend.
He also worked on PLUTO (pipeline under the ocean) down Brighton way, which was laying pipes for fuel across to France ready for D Day landings. This meant he worked waist and chest high in cold sea water he commented that he didn't realise how cold it would be.
