My name is Toni McClements and I interviewed Mrs Pam Mitchell who was only a young girl when the war broke out. This is her story.
I remember in World War Two lots of brothers about 4 or 5 of them went to fight in the war. When they were away people from America, Caanda, Franch and Portugal came to Ireland.
I also remember the rationing. If you needed a new jumper or dress you would'nt have the ration to buy socks so instead you would have to go to school bare legged. If people ran out of rations people would cycle to the Border and smugle it and bring it back to their house. Because of rationing you only got 2oz of sweets a week. You would only have got 2oz of sugar and butter per person in your family. You would'nt be able to get fresh fruit either.
Derry was very lucky in WW2 because it was mostly Belfast that got hit by bombs. Lots of people died when bombs was dropped in Belfast. Only two or three bombs were dropped in Derry.
