I lived in Turnditch during the war and I remember 1 night German planes came over and dropped incendiaries nearby. we watched as they followed the road all the way to Ashbourne, dropping bombs as they went. That was really all we saw of the war. I worked at Daulds which made tape and braids. Life didn't change too much for us and we could get food from the farmers so didn't do too badly. There was a pork shop nearby and so we could get bits of meat you wouldn't normally be able to get. I was married in 1942. I had a powder blue suit. I don't know how my mother did it but there was plenty of food. My husband worked at the Post Office Engineers so he was in the reserves but he also served in the Home Guard.
