The day war broke out, I was visiting my auntie in Teddington with my mother & brother. When the siren went after the announcement, my mother and auntie put my brother and I in the cupboard under the stairs.

It would have been a couple of years later when eggs were rationed to one per month each. My brother took one of the eggs and sat on it on the kitchen floor. He was ever so upset and cried becasue he broke the egg. When my mother asked what had happened, he said he thought he would hatch the egg so we could have chickens that would lay eggs for us to eat!

Waste not, want not, we had scrambled egg for tea!
