I was born in Croydon, just South of London, in 1940. Our house had a large garden which backed onto the main London to Brighton railway line and a big marshalling yard.
One day whilst playing in the garden, I saw a lone plane approaching from the North, so just as I had seen other children do before, I jumped up and down shouting " it's one of ours". Somebody suddenly yelled at me " no it's not ", and I could sense the urgency as I was quickly shepherded down into the safety of the air-raid shelter at the side of our house, where we stayed until the sound of his engine had gone.
I often wonder what that pilot was doing on that day and whether he reached home.
We were later evacuated to Wales, where my mother came from.
