James Wilson was born in 1930, and when he was 13, he started work on the farm. He wasn't really aware of the war, living in the countryside. He remembers once going for sticks for the allotment, and he saw a German plane overhead. Half an hour later, the sirens sounded, followed by the all-clear. The German plane was on reconnaissance, and had apparently got lost; it was most likely looking for an ammunition plant in Morecambe, known as "White Lung". He heard explosions in the distance. His first job earned him 15 shillings per week, but in harvest time he could earn 拢5 a week; he gave the money to his mum. Food wasn't as short in the countryside as in the towns and cities; he caught rabbits, and people dealt in cattle.
