At Aden, our next port of call, we paid but a short visit. The mountains were bare and crashed into the sea with a thin strip of man鈥檚 encroachment in places at the base. There were buildings that were squat; odds and ends of architecture, overawed by the heights above. The mountains were not towering but rugged. Here, in the distance, we first saw the camel ambling along the street. Whether there was more of Aden that we could not see, I do not know. Around the bay sailed a variety of small craft, the dhow being peculiar to this part of the world. Our nearest approach to the shore was a matter of some hundred yards but we did not dock. Soon we sailed on up the Red Sea, having only touched the edge of the land of Lawrence.
