My father was in the R.A.O.C. He was on a sleeping out pass, which meant he could sleep at home.
It was a saturday night and there was a church parade the next day. They had to wear gaters. He had forgotton them, left them in the camp. So, my mother made some of brown paper and painted them white.
One day he lent someone his great coat. The trouble was it was inspection day, so he borrowed someone elses. It was miles to big. The major said 'take the man to the tailors because his coat is a terrible fit!'
