I must have been 2 or 3 when the bombings started in Liverpool. We had an Anderson Shelter at the bottom of the back garden. My mother had a piece of white marble stone in the garden so that it reflected any light there was, so we could find our way to the shelter.
When the air raid shelter sounded she would get me out of bed and we would make our way to the shelter. She used to put a saucepan on my head and used the handle to guide me. It was to protect me from shrapnel falling.
Because I was just a little girl I had to carry my chamber pot with me which was enamel. We had to go down 2 steps into the shelter and then turn left into the doorway and I used to bang this chamber pot on the doorway of the shelter without fail. My neighbour would hear this and shout "goodnight" over the fence.
My mother had 3 little photo frames showing my fathers picture up in the shelter and we used to have a little talk to him every night so we never forgot his face.
