I was 13 when the war started. We lived in Higher Blakely, Manchester. My Father was in the TA and the ARP. We lived on the cricket field and we had a stone air-raid shelter, which was damp and musty.

We went in there just twice and my Mom said, ‘we ain’t going in there again, its bad for the baby.’ After that we went under the kitchen table and hoped for the best!
