My father had to stay at home as he was a master tanner and made leather that was processed from cow hide. This was classed as essential services because the army and air force needed leather for planes, lorries, gun parts and many other things. I remember he was disappointed in not actually being called up to fight for king and country as seven brothers who had been called up.
Bombing was very heavy but the Tannery survived. In case we were invaded my father was issued with a lead lined truncheon. I鈥檓 not sure what they thought he鈥檇 be able to do with this?
My mum and I (I was 3yrs) made rag rugs. I cut out the lengths and she pushed the pieces through the packing with a special wood handle hook. We always made new ones for Christmas.
